Model answer

Research first: check typical pay for the role in your city (see the salary pages on this site and the job advert). If you can, let them give the range first: "What is the budgeted range for this position?" If you must give a number, give a range based on your research and your experience, and say you are open to discussion depending on the full package.

Example: "Based on my research and my skills, I am looking for something in the range of X to Y, and I am flexible depending on the benefits and growth." Never invent a figure you cannot support, and do not lie about your current pay.
